What you need to apply for this position:
- B.S. biological science or M.T. and must meet the NYS Department of Education Licensing requirements for Clinical Lab Technologists.
- ASCP or NCA certification preferred
- Worked as a Laboratory Technologist in a Blood Bank, Transfusion Service or as a Generalist with Blood Bank experience.
- Must meet NYSDOH technologist requirements. Computer literate.
- Ability to use and familiarity with cell washers, blood irradiators, and plasma thawers.
What you'll be doing:
- Performing all aspects of routine clinical laboratory testing, basic serological problem resolution.
- Performing type and screen testing, cross matching, and antibody identification.
- Performing any required special techniques, ie, elution antigen typing, titration, fetal screens, cold agglutinins.
- Performing anti A & B titer on group O apheresis platelets.
- Performing bacterial contamination testing on random platelets.
- Preparing aliquots. Thawing Fresh Frozen Plasma and cryoprecipitate. Pooling platelets.
- Providing blood components intended for transfusion in accordance with cGMP as required by the NYSDOH, FDA, AABB, CAP and NYBC.
- Calculating and preparing blood for exchange transfusion.
- Logging in and retyping blood products.
- Releasing factor concentrates/derivatives.
- Issuing blood and blood products. Washing blood products.
- Delivering blood products to nursing stations.
- Irradiating products.
- Ensuring the proper disposal of bio-hazardous waste generated by the Laboratory, including collection, packaging, labeling, handling, tracking and documentation in accordance with OSHA standards.
- Ensuring equipment functioning appropriately and materials and inventory is adequate.
- Performing quality control on reagents.
- Maintaining blood inventory control at acceptable levels.
- Performing preventive maintenance, calibration and minor repair of laboratory instruments.
- Monitoring the currency of service records of all instruments as required by regulatory agencies.
- Organizing and restocking supplies.
- Making the appropriate response to various alarm, security and safety issues that might occur in the lab.
-Assisting in quality control and other required tests to meet state certification and standards
- Recording all quality control and quality assurance activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
- Describing the information processed by this position and any methods/equipment used.
- Recognizing the difference between product requests that meet or do not meet criteria.
- Assuring that products and reagents are not expired.
- Maintaining a complete inventory of supplies, forms, and notify supervisor when low.
- Entering data into the computer.
- Describing the authority/decision making permitted for the position.
- Deciding the appropriate serological techniques and approach required to resolve antibody workups.
